Office Redo - Shelving Fix

OK, we are really moving with this office makeover.  

Remember this sketch?  

Well, today I'm going to show you the progress we have made on the wall of shelves!  

I altered my design slightly because the shelving unit I wanted was sold before I could get it.  After some more hunting I found a used book shelf that I thought would work.  

So I made a more detail sketch.

To help Les and I visualize what we wanted, I drew it on graph paper and then drew an alternate top that I could set over it.   I was really set on arches across the top. 

Notice the triple arches in the first drawing and the single arch in the second. 

In the end we went with out any arches.

Now, let me show you the book shelf we found on KSL for $60. 

 It's about 7' wide, 6' tall and 14" deep.  

I know about now your thinking I've totally gone bonkers.  

I've got a blond oak desk, dark oak cabinets and now this black book shelf thing.  

Just stick with me until the end.  

Buying this book shelf saved me a lot of money and time. 

 I did feel bad when Les and I bought this piece.
 I knew I would be adding to it and need to take the trim off.  The guy selling it had just painted it.
 He said he distressed the front himself.
I felt so bad as Les and I tried to see if we would be able to get the trim off.
Anyway,
 the first thing we did was pull the wood face frame off the front and the cardboard back off.

Here's how it looked after we striped it down. 

 She came with metal shelf brackets on the insides for adjustable shelves.  We were going to add another section so we added some more brackets to the end.  

You can see them in the middle picture below.  They are the two brown stripes running down the end.

Next, I wanted it to look like a built in so Les made a toe kick base for the shelf to sit on.  Then we slid her into place.  

We then had to brainstorm how to fix the gap between our pieces.  

   

During our discussion I was banished to the notty corner!!

Just kidding!
 I just fit back there better.

In the end we moved the shelf out, added a tall skinny MDF board, and then moved the shelf back and attached the shelf to the already secure MDF board.
 Tada!
No more gap!!

Once the shelf was in place we began to add to it.  

First, 

we made another section that matched the measurements of the first two sections of the original book shelf.  

We had to attach the new section to the old with a Kreg Jig. 

 Can I just say I love this tool?  

You use the jig to drill angled holes that you can screw pieces together with and latter fill with a wooden plug.  

It's awesome.  

Once the end was built we added a 12" shelf to the top.

What do ya think?  

Crazy or genius?  

We are probably crazy, 

but I love it that way most of the time.

So far we have spent around $250 for all the wood and furniture. 

 Not too bad considering I've got two walls covered in built-in's.  

My sister just had two small built in's put in and it cost her around $2,600. 

 I'm happy with what we have done so far and our budget!
