Laundry Room Key Box

I love to go to the Parade of Homes each year in the Salt Lake Valley. I always find inspiration. A few years ago I saw this key box hanging in one of the houses. I really liked the idea of a key box and loved the numbers. I looked on line and they cost $25 to $100. I knew I could make one for less some day. So I took a picture and kept the thought in the back of my mind.  

Fast forward a few years. I was walking through DI one day and came upon this key box. It was missing the door, but that didn't bother me, so I snatched it up for $2 I think. We actually used it 'as is' in my old laundry room for a couple of years, but now that we were redoing the laundry room I decided it was time to fix up my key box. I started by cutting out some patterned scrapbook paper to fit into the back of the box. Then I made a frame out of some scrap molding. This would function as the door. I spray painted the box a crisp new white and used double stick tape to attached the scrapbook paper. Then I primed and painted the door with a free paint sample I got at Lowe's. I used a thin piece of Plexiglas from an old poster frame for the glass part. I cut it to size on my table saw and hot glued it to the back of the door. I had some tiny hinges, I think they were in my scrap booking stuff and bought some tiny screws from Lowe's for $1.24, to attache the door.  

For the knob I stole a mini knob off of an old broken jewelry box I had. I just drilled a hole the same diameter as the post and stuck it in with a little dab of glue.

Now for the key tags.  

The organizer in me had to label the keys,

I used metal rimmed key tags that you can get almost anywhere; I bought mine years ago at Walmart for scrap booking with. I printed out numbers for one side and words for the other side then using a 1 inch circle punch, I punched them all out and glued them to the tags. 

Last of all, I added the word 'Keys' in vinyl to the front of the glass.  

(A word to the wise, don't use the EcuyerDax font like I did. It does not come out of your Silhouette very well. )

So here is my version of a key box.

I love the bright colors and little details.  

Because I had almost everything left over from other projects, my key box cost me about $3.50.  

(And I think mine is cuter than my inspiration!!)
