My Sister's Living Room Reveal

It's finally time to show you my sister's finished living room!

She really loves the Tuscan feel, so we went with a modern twist on Tuscan style. 

We used brighter colors than traditional Tuscan and more modern patterns than the usual heavy brocades. 

Let's check it out!!

Very crisp, clean lines.

Let's start the tour off with the fireplace make over.

The mantel, as well as the wall above the fireplace, were painted a deep dark brown to add richness. Black glaze and gold dry brushing added depth to the mantel. And of coarse the new glass tile was the most dramatic change!!

It just amazes me!!

Let's look at the decor details.

Above the mantel we hung a lovely family picture. 

I really love this photo, but I am a little bias because I was the photographer!!

(Tip: Have your family wear clothes that will look good in the room where the photo will be displayed.)

The amazing frame was from a second hand store.

We fixed it up with wall patching compound, Krylon Brillant Gold Paint and black glaze. 

Just like I did with my pin board.

She already had the candle sticks, but they were gray.  A coat of cream colored paint and brown glaze and they look totally different. She bought the candles at Hobby Lobby. To balance out the tall candle sticks, she repainted a two tiered basket she had. She spray painted it Rust-Oleum Gloss Lagoon and then heavily distressed it.

My sister loves texture, so this basket was a no brainer. We filled it with colorful flowers from Hobby Lobby that coordinated with the room.

Next, let's look at the view coming from the kitchen.

We had fun with metal accents. In the dining area we hung this cut metal flower and created the words, "Meals and Memories are Made Here," with vinyl.  The other wall started with the picture her mother-in-law painted. She really wanted it in the room, so we started with it as a base and built up from there. It was such a tall wall that it need more than one painting.

Remember this second hand chair and ottoman we picked up for $75 for the set?

After adding some color coordinating trim to the pillows, it felt more at home in the space. We added a soft cozy blue throw and recovered a bolster with coordinating fabrics and trim.

This chair has down filled cushions, and is soooo soft. 

This is definitely the favorite spot in the room for everyone including Buddy.

The wall above the chair is huge so it needed something big. We had lots of ideas, but she had a hard time deciding what she wanted.  We ended up making a giant tapestry wall hanging. We even sewed a ton of beads on it to embellish it, but once we got it hung on the wall, she didn't like it. 

(Truthfully neither did I.)

So we went back to the drawing board.

We ended up using this big frame I made her buy a year ago. We saw it at a second hand store and I told her she wanted it and to buy it, so she did. She didn't like the picture that came with it, but that was and easy fix. We pulled the ugly picture out and covered the center with brown suede. Then we bought a 12 x 12 piece of scrap book paper and added a round intricate vinyl motif to the center. Sounds simple but looks great. It still needed more presence so we added the wrought iron scrolly decorations on either side.

She now loves it!!

She needed lots of seating in a small room with that darn corner fireplace. Sounds weird to add a sectional when you think space is cramped, but that is just what I told her to do. Rather than a big sofa and love seat, the sectional gives the same amount of seating but a smaller foot print. This sectional has an armless rounded end in front of the fireplace which just made it all the more functional. This sectional is actually from Ikea, Tidaforda in Hensta light brown.

We added a fun combination of pillows to add color and texture.

Now is a good time to mention the awesome rug. With the wood laminate floors she needed a rug to anchor the seating area. We found it at Lowe's, made by Balta. It had a neutral back ground that was not too dark or too light to show dirt. It's simple pattern adds a punch of color without overwhelming the space.

Tall walls were the mainstay of this room!!

Above the stairs we needed something big again. 

I told her go big or go home!!

This giant 4 foot by 4 foot tin tile fit the bill!!

She already had most of the items on the plant shelf and liked them. We added the blue glass jar, found at a second hand store, and the blue candles. We also used colored vinyl from my Silhouette machine to add designs to the end plant holders.

I did a post about these awesome valances here. But let's just look at them again. I love the look of curtains, but my sister didn't want them behind the couch so we opted for these valances. 

My favorite part is the nail head trim!
