Rocking the Basement!!

Remember that box of rocks in the basement?
No?
Well go back to "What to Do with  Great Deals" and watch the video.

Basically we found a large pallet of rock at the Restore for $100 before we even started the basement. We wanted to use it for the fireplace, but we weren't ready for it yet so we had to get creative in storing it!
We finally put that rock up on the wall.

Check out the video for all the details.

But here is a quick run down.
First we put up cement board.
Our other option was to put up black paper, chicken wire and then add a scratch coat of mud.
We thought the cement board sounded easier, so that's what we did.
It was hard to get the rock and mortar to stick and if I had to do it again I think I would try the black paper route.

Next we measured and drew out a template on the floor and placed rock in it. It was like a giant rock puzzle.

Then we installed the rocks one by one.

Next we tinted the grout and grouted. We got our first batch a little runny, and it took us awhile to figure out how long to let it dry before smoothing the grout, but it all worked out in the end.
What do you think?

I love the rock next to the grey cabinets.

Can't wait to show you more.

Thanks for stopping by.

YES YES YES LOVE LOVE LOVE

For $100 + sweat equity you did a $2k custom wall! (No wonder your arms are so toned!).

Have a wonderful weekend!
